It’s showtime, folks! Joe Gideon (Roy Scheider) is a successful theater and film director. He loves his work, alcohol, cigarettes and women. At the same time as preparing a spectacular Broadway show with 50 dancers, he is also trying to finish a feature film that he works on in the evenings. The stress takes its toll on him; the incorrigible workaholic turns increasingly to alcohol and pills and eventually ends up in hospital after a heart attack. He continues to work and live to excess from his hospital bed. Fosse put himself at the center of his musical about show business and chose Roy Scheider to portray him, which he did brilliantly.
