A film that marks both a beginning and an end: THE TREASURE is both Pabst’s debut and one of the last German Expressionist films. The setting is an old bell foundry, where the search for gold believed to be hidden in the building is the starting point for greed, power and jealousy. While the bell founder (Albert Steinrück), his wife (Ilka Grüning) and particularly his apprentice (Werner Krauß) become increasingly obsessed with tracking down the gold, a romantic relationship blossoms between the bell founder's new apprentice Arno (Hans Brausewetter) and his daughter Beate (Lucie Mannheim). When the treasure is found, the tragedy takes its infernal course.
