Magical History Tour
: Back to the Beginning – Directorial Debuts (2)

Since there are so many interesting debut films, it made sense to focus on them for a second month. As in May, and in keeping with the fundamental approach of the Magical History Tour, June's program explores a wide variety of stylistic directions. A unifying element is the force with which these artistic beginnings push back against cinematic and social conventions and challenge viewing habits (in at least one case, still shocking today), as well as the directors’ courage and willingness to take risks—sometimes to ruthlessly expose their environment, sometimes to place themselves radically at the center. Quite a few of the filmmakers gathered here retained this spirit of innovation and experimentation in their later work. (Milena Gregor)
