) “I know where I’m going!” declares the headstrong, ambitious Joan Webster (Wendy Hiller) on her way from London to Scotland where she is to marry an older, wealthy industrialist on the island of Kiloran in the Hebrides. A storm leaves her stranded in Mull and unable to make the crossing. Her unplanned stopover in a small village, where she encounters a culture shrouded in myth and the natural beauty, causes her perspective to shift. Martin Scorsese recalled seeing the film for the first time shortly before beginning filming Raging Bull (1980) and being “overwhelmed by [its] illustration of love laced with mysticism.” Modern but timeless. We’ll be showing a video introduction by Martin Scorsese, that was made when the film was restored.
