A poetically condensed and fragmentary account of the life of naive painter Nikolos Pirosmanashvili (1862–1918), who became known as Pirosmani. The titular loner tries his hand at various professions but fails time and again; he flees his own wedding and begins working as a commercial painter. Shengelaia developed both the structure and the visual style of the film from Pirosmani’s paintings and aesthetic: he worked with flat tableaux that make the spaces appear almost two-dimensional, with long takes and stylized genre scenes.
