The question of the availability of images is also a focus for the curatorial and archival collective Counter Archives, which operates between London and Singapore and provides a platform for communities engaged in shared practices of emancipation. The collective's program explores questions of gender and belonging that go beyond Western-dominated perspectives and also involve speculative fictions and reflections on corporeality.
GARDEN AMIDST THE FLAME (2022) is an experimental coming-of-age film that explores Indigenous traditions and fluid conceptions of gender, asking what happens when traditional history is allowed to take on new forms. DAUGHTERS OF DESTINY (2021) is about three teenage friends whose life in Parisian banlieues is turned upside down when they magically enter the alternate reality of a queer cabaret, where portraits of Black and Arab resistance fighters and icons watch over their reunion.

How experiences of reception can be shared is the focus of the Japalang zine workshop on 15.11 in the feminist elsewheres project space, where Counter Archives will take up Saidiya Hartman’s concept of “critical fabulation” and invite participants to reimagine archival material.

Further information about the program and the workshops can be found at www.feminist-elsewheres.de.
