Non è sogno

One can see aging ragazzi di vita in them, Accattones who can now also come from Romania: In his experimental documentary, Giovanni Cioni gets the inmates of a detention center in Perugia to work with snippets of dialogue from Pedro Calderón de la Barca's play “Life is Dream” and Pasolini's CHE COSA SONO LE NUVOLE? Starting with Ninetto's self-questioning about whose truth he should believe in ("My own? That of others? That of the one up there?"), the inmates venture into self-dramatization. Which of their subsequent confessions, confessions and songs belong? Perhaps here, too, the words should only be allowed to speak for themselves. (hp)

Che cosa sono le nuvole?

“Othello” is performed in a puppet theater, but the puppets are embodied by real human beings. The doubling of the play's relationships runs through this poetic short film, an episode of Capriccio all’italiana. While the tragedy unfolds on stage, Giovanni "Ninetto" Davoli's Othello struggles offstage in vain with the lack of alternatives. The peasant audience of this opera dei pupi, however, revolts. Ninetto and Totò's puppets end up on the garbage dump. Ninetto demands that Totò explain to him what clouds are - without success. A film poster shown at the beginning had already anticipated this with its reference to Michel Foucault's "The Order of Things": Words and things are connected by the thinnest of ties.
