Bread and games in the 21st century: An international, state-sanctioned media event called "The Big Hunt" serves as a vent for the global population’s anger. Anyone who survives 10 duels - five each as a "victim" and five as a "hunter" – can win big money. When Caroline Meredith (Ursula Andress) and Marcello Poletti (Marcello Mastroianni with blond hair), the two top killers of the season, compete against each other in Rome, the world awaits the 10th victim with bated breath. There is always a television crew on hand to broadcast the murder live, as part of a commercial. Petri's colorful pop-art sci-fi satire of a totalitarian future, in which destructive urges are channeled, features stylish costumes in the tradition of André Courrèges' futuristic space look. (hjf)
