Three seamstresses (Lucia Bosè, Cosetta Greco, Liliana Bonfatti) from the suburbs of Rome who are friends and work near Piazza di Spagna spend their lunch breaks on the famous steps, watched by the amorous cab driver Marcello (Marcello Mastroianni), as well as a professor (Giorgio Bassani) who serves as the film's narrator. Emmer depicts the education of the heart and the friends’ transition from adolescence to adulthood with atmosphere and poetry. (hjf)
