The isolated island of Rodrigues lies in the Indian Ocean. Like many of the other locals, Marie Louise Édouard has made a living catching octopus since childhood. But as the government has imposed a ban on fishing because of overfishing, climate change and altered markets, this traditional industry is gradually dying. Alternative work can be found in the forest, but the fishers seem lost doing this and the wages are barely enough to make ends meet. A time of upheaval and uncertainty, locally and globally. In PIQUEUSES, Kate Tessa Lee and Tom Schön observe the scenery with long, calm shots, modeling a film from images and sounds that can be experienced with all the senses and enabling an experience of space and time. Land and water, glistening light and deep darkness, the vastness of the view and the confinement of the dwellings, wind and calm - and again and again: the view of the sea. (bik)
