The program “While the sea swells and the earth rumbles” presents films that explore environmental changes, particularly their ecological, geological, social and historical consequences. The films move between fictions, memories and forgetting; a recurring element is the sea. In INSOLITE, we set out onto Vesuvius by night, just before the start of an earthquake. In PERIL OF THEANTILLES, the cholera epidemic moves towards Port-au-Prince in Haiti as a hurricane starts to blow. A TALE OF TWO ISLANDS shows encounters in the two capital cities of the volcanic Mayotte Islands in the Indian Ocean in complex post-colonial spaces. L’ÉTOILE DE MER navigates through the sea, an essay about forgetting. With SONNE UNTER TAGE, we end in night and darkness, exploring the toxic radiation of uranium. (Maya Schweizer)
