Filmhaus Nürnberg: Celebrating Cinema

In the universe of alternative or non-mainstream cinema, there are fixed stars that have been shining for a long time now. The brightest stars constantly give off light and offer orientation. For us at the Filmhaus Nürnberg, Arsenal has always been the place where world cinema can be experienced in multifaceted fashion and its various contexts revealed. Gravitational effects are produced – an example of this is the reverberations created by the large-scale Ozu retrospective, which threw up the question of “How to go on living without Ozu?” Within the Arsenal orbit, we also appreciate the Magical History Tour, which shines a light on film history from a wide range of different perspectives. Its latest theme is “Cheers! A compact guide to onscreen celebrations”. Instead of Yasujiro Ozu, we are putting on spotlight on Indian director Satyajit Ray with a small tribute, whose work is still waiting to be discovered in Nürnberg. Among other recent Arsenal achievements, we are also presenting editions of Big Cinema, Small Cinema and Condition Report. Last not least, Erika and Ulrich Gregor, the “cinema parents of the Filmhaus” (Christiane Schleindl), will be our guests for a carte blanche session where they will present their favourite films.
