As part of an international workshop on film studies and media writing organized by the Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz, film scholars, curators and archivists will be presenting and discussing the films of Christine and Kurt Rosenthal. The Rosenthals studied graphic design, painting and film, also at the Fachhochschule Mainz, before they moved to South America. From 1973 to 1999, the filmmaking and married couple lived in Peru and created a broad oeuvre, including several documentaries, some of which were commissioned by public broadcasters in Germany and the Netherlands. From 2000 until they died together in 2023, they lived in Mainz, where they continued to work on films, paintings and books. “The Rosenthals: Mainz-Peru-Mainz” begins with the public screening of two documentaries from the Arsenal archive (MADE IN USA, 1974; ORO EN MADRE DE DIOS, 1981) that will be introduced by Argentinian archivist and media studies scholar Carolina Cappa and Peruvian researcher Julio Gonzales Oviedo.
