LES VACANCES DE MONSIEUR HULOT (Jacques Tati, France 1953, 13. & 20.11.) Summer holidays in Brittany – a most appealing prospect for Monsieur Hulot – Tati's famous alter ego, who appears for the first time in Tati's second feature film. What’s far less appealing for the rest of the holidaymakers is the presence of the lovable petty bourgeois man in constant battle with the objects around them, with the chaos produced by Hulot taking them all to the very brink. Whether in front of the hotel in his car, listening to jazz music in his room, at the beach with his paddle boat or playing tennis – wherever Hulot appears, turbulence and catastrophe soon follow. One of the greatest and most idiosyncratic films about going on holiday – the next journey will soon be on its way! (mg)
