A Russian worker who has lost his memory remains traumatized in a provincial train station. Ten years later, his memories return and he embarks on a journey to regain his old life, but finds nothing as it was. St Petersburg has become Leningrad and there is a new socialist order. Eventually, Filimonov also finds his wife as well as his memory and develops a new social conscience. OBLOMOK IMPERII(Fragment of a Memory, Friedrich Ermler, USSR 1929) is an ideal example of the singular genre of Soviet films made between 1924 and 1932 that used cinematic methods to bring the concept of the New Soviet Man to life on the screen. We are presenting the newly digitalized film to mark the release of the DVD "Der Neue Mensch. Aufbruch und Alltag im revolutionären Russland". (ah) (24.4.)
