Found Footage is one of the after-images of film. Since the early days of compilation and collage, cinema has been seducing with the pathos of the fragmentary, with the chutzpah of pirate-like appropriation, with  gutsy shifts and detournements. Techniques of the avant-garde such as collage, assimilation and alteration, figures of serialness and fragmentary: Different aesthetic and economic frames of reference confront each other here. The reconfiguration of visuals from the media becomes the foodstuff of variable spaces of memory, vacuities of the cultural industry to montage that is driven by algorithms. A non-representative selection from Arsenal's "analogue" collection provides the basis for a discussion about some works in the history of Found Footage and the rhetoric of appropriating montage. Bonus: Maya Schweizer's new film A TALL TALE (D 2017). (mb) (12. & 26.6.)
