Forum Expanded Post Screening Discussions

A big part of the Forum and Forum Expanded tradition is not just watching films and art works but also talking about them. All screenings are followed by discussions with the filmmakers and artists. Screenings at silent green are followed by extended panel discussions. From February 21 to 28, the filmmakers, artists and other invited guests will pick up and explore themes and discourses.

This Month's Filmmakers’ Choice

The next event as part of our series Filmmakers' Choice will be presented by Melissa Dullius and Gustavo Jahn on February 10: DOCES PODERES (Sweet Power, Lúcia Murat, Brazil 1996) is a chronicle of the first post-dictatorship elections that took place in Brazil in 1989 told from the perspective of the media. It is well known that TV Globo edited the final debate between the presidential candidates Collor de Mellos and Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in such a way that it favored the former who went on to win the election. In 1990, Collor de Mellos disbanded cultural funding structures which effectively disabled feature film production. Twenty years later, history is repeating itself like a macabre nightmare. Since taking power in 2019, the current president has re-destroyed the film industry in Brazil. DOCES PODERES anticipates - in a latent way - the themes at the center of debate in Brazil today, such as racism and female emancipation. Combining politics, power and seduction, the plot borrows from the narrative structures of telenovelas and TV stars also starred in the film.

Big Cinema, Small Cinema #34: Playing with masks

The next event as part of our series for children takes place on February 16, for all those aged 5 and above: Sometimes life is wild and spectacular at the theater and cinema. Actors dress up and become magical beings. Women become butterfly women in Segundo de Chomóns LES PAPILLONS JAPONAIS (France 1908), artistes rise out from tiny boxes in a marvelous way in MAGIC BRICKS (France 1902) by the Pathé brothers. In ROSALIE DANSEUSE (France 1912) by Roméo Bosetti and THE MASQUERADER (USA 1914) by Charles Chaplin misadventurers achieve their goal humorously by disguising themselves with masks and costumes. Afterwards, there will be a chance to make masks and perform together. The composer and pianist Eunice Martins will provide live accompaniment.

Discussions at silent green

In addition to the regular Q&As after Forum screenings, silent green Kulturquartier will host panel discussions following some of our films. From February 22 to 25, the filmmakers and other invited guests will pick up and explore themes and discourses from the films after the screenings.

The Programme Is Now Online

The complete Forum and Forum Expanded programme for 2020 is now online!

Tickets will be on sale from Monday, February 17. For members of Arsenal, there are reduced ticket prices! You can get tickets for all Berlinale Forum and Forum Expanded screenings for 6€ per screening or 24€ for 6 screenings. An Arsenal membership costs 12€/9€ for six months. You can become a member at the Arsenal counter.
