Following its world premiere at this year's Berlinale Forum, DELPHINE ET CAROLE, INSOUMUSES (Delphine et Carole) by Callisto McNulty received two major awards at international film festivals in March: the Grand Prix for best documentary at the Forum International sur les Droits Humains (FIFDH) in Geneva and the Audience Award in the documentary category at the Festival International du Film de Femmes in Creteil. The Grand Prix of the international jury in Creteil was given to KAOTIČNI ŽIVOT NADE KADIĆ (The Chaotic Life of Nada Kadić) by Marta Hernaiz, which premiered as part of last year's Forum programme.

Surprise: Another film event for children will take place on March 31, dedicated to the very subject of surprise: We have selected films that are surprising in very different ways. A surprising image appears right in the middle of Renate Sami‘s WENN DU EINE ROSE SIEHST (Germany 1995). In the short, silent movie TULIPAN (Germany 2001) by Bärbel Freund and Ute Aurand, what is invisible becomes visible COOTS (UK 1998) and BLINK (UK 1977) by Guy Sherwin are small black and white puzzles and Maya Deren’s montage is surprising in A STUDY IN CHOREOGRAPHY FOR THE CAMERA (USA 1945). The students the Wilhelm-von-Humboldt-Gemeinschaftsschule surprise us with their imagination and speed and there will be a surprise film at the end. For everyone aged six and above.

As part of his exploration of Arsenal’s archive between 2008 and 2012, the curator and artist Ian White (1971–2013) compiled two film programs, presented performances and set up several collaborative projects with artists. He considered the cinema and theater stage spaces of possibility and politics, where the relationship between live events and moving images, production and performance, immateriality and objecthood could be renegotiated.

On March 13, another public screening will be organised by the Harun Farocki Institut: Ethnographic film was a constant point of reference for Harun Farocki and offers an example of how film and research are intertwined. Of Jean Rouch’s 12 films in Arsenal’s archive, we will screen one of the least known. FOLIE ORDINAIRE D’UNE FILLE DE CHAM diverges from traditional ethnographic work and is instead a multi-layered media translation. “Taking a text by Julius Amédée Laou, a young author from Martinique, that was staged in the theater by Daniel Mesguish, Jean Rouch transposed the plot to a hospital to give it a “scientific” frame: A psychiatrist named Charcot presents a spectacular case to his colleagues so that they can themselves evaluate it. The viewers are the witnesses of this presentation alongside the doctors.” (Forumsblatt) The film will be preceded by a film in which Raymond Depardon and Jean Rouch film each other filming.
