Forum and Forum Expanded 2019

It's that time of the year again: As part of the Berlinale, Arsenal is putting on the 49th Forum and the 14th Forum Expanded. The Forum main programme consists of 39 films, 31 of which world premieres. It doesn’t consider itself some sort of ‘best of’ list, but rather gathers together a selection of films that try things out, take a stance and refuse to compromise. Some look back at the history of the 20th century, while others focus on what’s to come, even as they remain anchored in the here and now. Numerous films take the written word as their starting point, drawing on or making explicit reference to literature or working with letters, poems and other writings.

The 14th Forum Expanded is moving to a new location: The silent green Kulturquartier will open a new Berlin exhibition venue in the 1600 square meter subterranean Betonhalle on the grounds of the former Wedding crematorium, and the Forum Expanded group exhibition, which has been taking place annually since 2006, will be the inaugural event. The exhibition will be expanded into Ebensperger Rhomberg Gallery and Luxoom Lab, spaces also located on the silent green grounds. And for the first time, the exhibition duration will extend past the Berlinale festival dates until March 9. The exhibition opening will take place on February 6. This year’s Forum Expanded motto is „Antikino (The Siren’s Echo Chamber)“. The programme consists of 30 short and long films, 17 installation works, and a performance that point to life outside the echo chamber that we find ourselves in, and not just in social media.

Archival Constellations in Forum and Forum Expanded

The Forum’s objectives have always included the idea of looking at film history from the point of view of contemporary cinema. Living archive work produces new things of all kinds. More and more films are being digitised and restored. This doesn’t just allow significant moments from cinema to be called to mind, but also enables existing film historical narratives to be reconsidered in a present marked by transmediality and globalisation. The title “Archival Constellations” is at once an expression of this interplay between old and new and a reference to the collaborations and acts of community and solidarity which enable digitisation to help rewrite film history.

New DVD releases: "Havarie", "Revision" and "And-ek ghes..."

Still from Havarie

After the THE HALFMOON FILES and DER TAG DES SPATZEN, we’re very pleased to release three further DVDs featuring films by Philip Scheffner, in cooperation with Filmgalerie 451: HAVARIE (2016), AND-EK GHES … (2016) and REVISION (2012). In his works, Scheffner has developed his very own style of political reasoning, which redefines what is and is not visible. He creates visual and auditory spaces, interweaving stories and conducting investigations whose points of connection remain open.
