Archival Assembly #1

“What is film cultural heritage, what communities and narratives, what addressees and mediation formats can be derived from it, and how durable are they? Or: What still unknown archives can the present produce?” In 2017, in order to pursue answers to these initial questions, Arsenal – Institute for Film and Video Art invited partners to develop research, publications, presentations, and exhibition projects under the title Archive außer sich. These included the International Short Film Festival Oberhausen, silent green Film Feld Forschung, Harun Farocki Institut, SAVVY Contemporary, production collective pong film, and the Goethe University Frankfurt’s Master’s program “Film Culture: Archiving, Programming, Presentation”.

“Archival Assembly #1” marks the (temporary) end of the five-year project “Archive außer sich.” From September 1 to 8 film archives and other archival projects will meet for a public exchange (download festival program PDF). Four intertwined parts form the festival’s contours. At Arsenal Cinema and in the HKW’s Westgarten there are daily film screenings, presentations of restorations, and other projects. SAVVY Contemporary will host the exhibition How to find meaning in dead time, curated by Maha Maamoun and Ala Younis, while two symposia complete the program: “After the Archive” (in collaboration with the Goethe University in Frankfurt) in the Kuppelhalle at silent green, and “The Right to a Public II” at Arsenal Cinema. In addition, every morning in the Kuppelhalle at silent green and in Sinema Transtopia there will be presentations on precarious archival projects under the title “Found Futures,” organized in collaboration with the Goethe-Institut, with the goal of networking and mutual support. This will also be the context for a discussion of the collectively produced paper “Call for Action and Reflection on Decolonising Film Archives.”
