Celebrated Polish pianist Magdalena is in West Germany on a concert tour, which becomes a trip into the past at the same time. As an 18-year-old, she was taken to a forced labor camp in Germany and fell in love with Steinlieb there, the young owner of a shoe factory.   Now she is trying to find him again, as well as Wenk, who helped her back then and is now engaged with fighting the armament of West Germany. When she realizes that Steinlieb is involved in the defamation and persecution of Wenk, she is deeply disappointed—both by him in person and by the political developments in West Germany.
