A ghost story, a martial arts spectacle a Buddhist reflection—in King Hu’s seminal feat of cinematic brilliance, technical mastery and acting agility merge with classical Chinese art forms and spirituality. At the heart of A TOUCH OF ZEN is the mysterious Yang, who hides in a remote house apparently inhabited by ghosts. Fleeing from those who killed her father and want to kill her too, she meets young scholar Gu, who is inadvertently sucked into her battle for survival. The epic battle between Buddhist wisdom and secular power lies concealed at the core of the breathtakingly choreographed battle scenes, which are captured with virtuoso camerawork. (mg)
