"He knew them all," "the chronicler of DEFA," "a man of quiet sovereignty" - the numerous obituaries that appeared in the German media for the film historian, journalist and longtime board member of the DEFA Foundation Ralf Schenk depict a film enthusiast for whom film works were always key and who knew the ins and outs of DEFA filmmaking like no other. Schenk died on August 17, 2022, much too early after a short illness, and it is still hard to grasp. He was in the middle of various projects, had publishing plans, and was full of ideas and stories that nobody had yet written down.
The DEFA Foundation pays tribute to Ralf Schenk, with the Deutsche Kinemathek, the Filmmuseum Potsdam and Arsenal, as well as family members, friends, and companions. One short film from each of DEFA's feature, documentary, and animated film studios, which were close to Schenk's heart, will be shown. (Philip Zengel)
