Orphée's iconic entrance into the underworld through the mirror is at once one of the most famous scenes in film history and Cocteau’s tribute to the Surrealists of the late 1920s. A rapturous and poetic but then grotesque and prosaic dance based loosely on the legend of Orpheus and Eurydice develops on either side of the mirror, featuring the eponymous poet (Jean Marais), his wife Eurydice (Maria Déa) and a mysterious wanderer of the netherworld called "Princess" (Maria Casarès), and her princess' driver.
