A long-solved criminal case, a convicted felon on the run, a detective on sick leave and the Thuringian Forest form the basis for Christoph Hochhäusler’s version of a TV crime drama, created as part of the TV film trilogy Dreileben, which was conceived in collaboration with Dominik Graf and Christian Petzold. Molesch (Stefan Kurt), who is in prison for the murder of a girl, flees into the woods, where hunger and his fear of the police take their toll on him. The detective (Eberhard Kirchberg) is seeking a new perspective; he wants to put himself in the fugitive’s shoes, delves into the past and uncovers inconsistencies. Perhaps the monster is not a monster at all? In the forest, Molesch comes across anthills, a lighter, hiking groups, a child with a frog, caves shrouded in fog—and in a house in the village, he finds a cardboard box labeled “When I am no longer here.” Darkness, everywhere. And Molesch becomes the person society has made him into. (bik)
