Oscillating between drama and black comedy, Vincho Nchogu’s feature film debut ONE WOMAN ONE BRA takes a critical, yet absurdly comical look at the role of international NGOs and the effects of “white saviorism” in rural communities: The residents of the Kenyan village of Sayit receive official documents that confirm their lawful ownership of land based on their family lineage. But just as the village chief delivers the joyful news, the 38-year-old Star faces the threat of losing her home because the title deeds are based on kinship ties. She grew up as an orphan and does not know her ancestry. The fact that she is unmarried and does not have enough money to buy the land exacerbates her already precarious situation. She becomes hopeful after she happens to discover a photo of herself as a child in the “World Book of Nomads” but her attempt to prove her identity turns into a race against time. Growing increasingly desperate, she eventually agrees to a morally questionable deal with an NGO and produces an awareness campaign. Due to a misunderstanding, she finds herself in conflict with her community. The screening will be followed by a discussion with the director (via video).
