Innenwelt Außenwelt

Inner World, Outer World

With science and theater as its institutional forebears, cinema explores the threshold between the inner and outer worlds. As both an artist and a viewer, time and again I find myself drawn to films that fall into the experimental or performative genres. The following selection examines the scope for psychological and choreographic awareness that comes to life through clear external parameters. In WAITING (USA 1979), Nan Hoover explores the perception of time as an emotional experience. In BEFORE THE FLOWERS OF FRIENDSHIP FADED, FRIENDSHIP FADED by Lior Shamriz (Germany 2011), the protagonist’s inner experience grapples with the external reality of social bonds. The silent film HÄNDE by Stella F. Simon and Miklós N. Bándy (Germany, 1929) explores relationships as performative body language. In Maya Schweizer’s film ERRANT GESTURES (2023), hands inhabit an associative space between the conscious and the unconscious. Finally, in Sharon Lockhart’s early film TEATRO AMAZONAS (USA 1999), perception becomes tangible as a political choreography through a subversion of the fourth wall.  (Anna Zett)
