Every film takes place in a defined space, the construction of which is of great importance to the film's effect on the spectator. Differently laid-out spaces not only allow marking various styles (naturalism or artificiality), but also cinematically evoke moods and emotions (vastness or confinement). We will screen nine films (and two shorts) in which spaces play a special role, either as a driving force of the plot or an expression of the protagonists’ emotional states.
Vincente Minnelli – The World Is a Stage
"The world is a stage, the stage is a world of entertainment." The refrain of the song "That's Entertainment" from one of the best-known film musicals, THE BAND WAGON (1953), describes Vincente Minnelli's (1903–1986) vision of combining art and life, art and entertainment. Minnelli's work exemplarily stands for the successful merging of high and pop culture, authorship and genre - within Hollywood's studio system.
