”Persons are objects of the State and of Capital and are employed as such. This is precisely what I try to show.”

On 18 July 2009, the NO, Global Tour was launched – without a fixed schedule or itinerary – at the Napoleonic stables in Lucca: a sculptural NO in Arial type made of black marine plywood measuring some 3.2 metres high and 4 metres wide and weighing in at 250 kilos per letter. Being a regular chronicler of disaster, a NO proved perfect for Sierra: a NO capable of traveling around the world, filmed as the monumental leading character in a road movie. With a spirit closer to the Zeitgeist than to the genius loci, Santiago Sierra posits NO, Global Tour as a synthesis between travel and its consequent transmutation in a continuous road movie that we film in our minds; the icon, which acts as the key to forging a relationship with the environment; and the sculptural power of the letter. At the semantic level, it had to be capable of functioning everywhere. In his work Santiago Sierra often addresses structures of power that operate in our everyday existence. Sierra’s work intervenes into these structures exposing situations of exploitation and marginalization. His work never repeats reality, but challenges it exposing its intrinsic mechanisms. The essence of the work is often in the tension generated and sustained between the event or its documentation and the spectator.

Santiago Sierra, born 1966 in Madrid, lives and works in Mexico City. He studied fine arts in Madrid, Hamburg and Mexico City. His work has been shown widely in exhibitions and museums (i.e. P.S.1, New York, KW, Berlin and the Venice Biennial).
