The Prizes of the Independent Juries

The independent juries of the Berlinale have awarded prizes to another two Forum films: The Conféderation Internationale des Cinémas D'Art et Essai (C.I.C.A.E.) awarded TEATRO DE GUERRA (THEATRE OF WAR) by Lola Arias, which also received the Prize of the Ecumenical Jury. L'EMPIRE DE LA PERFECTION (IN THE REALM OF PERFECTION) by Julien Faraut was given the Award of the Tagesspiegel Readers' Jury.

The Tagesspiegel Readers’ Jury gives the prize for the Best Film in the Berlinale Forum to “L’empire de la perfection“ by Julien Faraut. With humour and true lightness of touch, the film perfectly connects a range of different genres: the Western, the instructional film, the opera and the psychological drama. It also explores the obsessions of the filmmaker, the sportsperson and anyone else striving for perfection in impressive fashion. Tongue in cheek without ever being didactic, it finds a great number of analogies and metaphors for controlling time, whether in film, in sport or in life itself. Films can lie, but time cannot!?

And this is what the C.I.C.A.E. jury said: Faithful to the philosophy and ethics of Berlinale Forum, while blurring the boundaries between fiction and documentary, "Gesamtkunstwerk" and film, "Teatro de guerra" is a brave attempt to negotiate late 20th century postcolonial conflict, The Falklands/Malvinas War, and its painful implications. We would like to highlight "Teatro de guerra" potential to engage diverse international audiences through its analytical and emotional form. We are looking forward to future works from director Lola Arias and cinematographer Manuel Abramovich, as well as the other promising Argentinian filmmakers in this year's Forum.
