The Adventure of Denchu-Kozo was the last film shot by Shinya Tsukamoto on 8 mm before he created a worldwide furore with Tetsuo: The Iron Man. All the elements of his cyberpunk style came together here, his creativity spurred on by technical restrictions. A time-travelling fantasy film about a bullied boy upon whose back an electrical pylon grows and who must unexpectedly save humanity from a gang of destructive vampires is peppered with erotic fantasies, melodramatic entanglements and science fiction set pieces. Surprisingly sophisticated special effects, incredible costumes and wild rock music give it the status of a true 80s underground classic. (Christoph Terhechte)
