The Berlinale Forum and Forum Expanded and the Two Stages of the Berlinale

Organised by Arsenal – Institute for Film and Video Art, the Berlinale Forum and Forum Expanded are the independent sections of the Berlinale.
After the Corona pandemic made the original plan of organising an in-person festival in February impossible, the Berlinale is now taking place in two stages: firstly as a digital event from March 1st to 5th, which is aimed at an industry audience with the exception of a few public panel events to be held online. In June, Berlinale audiences will then have the opportunity to see the Berlinale selection in cinemas and at open-air screenings.

What role are Forum and Forum Expanded playing in this scenario?

They are represented at both stages of the festival. The films chosen by each selection commitee will be shown digitally at the European Film Market and in cinemas in June, with the main venues to include silent green Kulturquartier, SİNEMA TRANSTOPIA and the HKW roof terrace alongside the Arsenal Cinema. This year's Forum Expanded exhibition will be housed at SAVVY Contemporary. The programmes will be smaller than in usual years and are to be announced in February.

Lectures, in-depth Q&As and discussions will complete the Forum and Forum Expanded selections in June so that the discursive traditions of these two independet sections can continue. At a time of crisis such as this one, it's particularly important to open up a space for reflection in which film can be placed in relation to the world.
