Hardly any other contemporary filmmaker has been ascribed a greater proximity to the world of “surrealism” than Lynch: (nightmarish) dreamlike settings, blurred boundaries between reality and imagination, past and present, multiple non-linear narrative strands. Thoroughly damaged protagonists get lost in the director’s unsettled fantasy landscapes, as do - sooner or later - perplexed audiences. MULHOLLAND DRIVE is no exception: the starting point is a car accident, a loss of memory, two women and a seemingly impossible search for identity. (mg)
