Kino 16 – Introduction to Artistic Work with 16 mm Film

Kino 16 is an intensive hands-on workshop introducing participants to artistic work with 16mm film. The workshop focuses on experimental approaches to the material and sensory qualities of analogue film and the Bolex camera. Light, movement, surfaces, and the inherent properties of the medium play a central role and serve as the starting point for participants’ own cinematic experiments.

Under the guidance of filmmakers Ute Aurand, Juan David González Monroy, and Anja Dornieden, participants will move through the entire artistic process of analogue filmmaking: from the fundamentals of analogue image-making, camera practice, shooting, and hand-processing to analogue editing and a final projection.

The participation fee is 450 euros. The fee includes one roll of 16mm film stock (30 m) for the “chain film” as well as an additional roll for the production of a film in groups of three. Bolex cameras will be provided. No prior experience is required. The number of participants is limited.

Registration is open until 31 July 2026 at: kino16@arsenal-berlin.de

Introduction to Analogue Image-Making
With Ute Aurand and Juan David González Monroy

The workshop begins with an introduction to the fundamentals of analogue image-making. In the afternoon, a selection of experimental films will be screened in the cinema, offering inspiration and serving as a creative spark for the week ahead.

20:00, Kino Arsenal (optional)

Condition Report screening series at Arsenal

With Juan David González Monroy

Condition Report is a screening series that follows film prints as changing archival materials and brings overlooked or forgotten discoveries from the collection back into the cinema.

Tuesday, 1 September
10:00–17:00, LaborBerlin

Camera, Chain Film, and Darkroom
With Ute Aurand and Juan David González Monroy

Following a practical introduction to the 16mm Bolex camera, participants will carry out their first shooting exercise: a so-called “chain film”, created collaboratively in groups. Afterwards, the basics of darkroom work will be introduced, and the exposed material will be hand-processed.

Wednesday, 2 September
10:00–17:00, Remise Arsenal

Projection, Idea Development, and Beginning of Shooting
With Ute Aurand and Juan David González Monroy

In the morning, the processed chain film will be projected and discussed together. Participants will then form new groups, develop their own film ideas, and begin shooting. Each group will have one 30-metre roll of film at its disposal, corresponding to a running time of approximately 2:45 minutes.

Thursday, 3 September
10:00–18:00, LaborBerlin

Shooting, Darkroom, and Cameraless Techniques
With Ute Aurand, Anja Dornieden and Juan David González Monroy

The groups will continue shooting. Depending on their progress, they will hand-process their exposed material one after another in the darkroom. In parallel, guided exercises in cameraless techniques will take place, allowing participants to create images directly on film strips without the use of a camera. These techniques can also be used to produce short title or animation sequences.

Friday, 4 September
10:00–18:00, Studio Ute Aurand and LaborBerlin

Editing, Projection, and Closing Session
With Ute Aurand and Juan David González Monroy

The exposed material will be digitally scanned. Participants will then have the opportunity to work with their material on an analogue editing table. At the end of the workshop, the resulting films will be projected. A joint feedback session will offer space for exchange about artistic decisions, learning processes, and technical experiences.

The film material for the workshop is provided by Kodak Germany.
